AirMac Expressですがオーディオ機器としてはアナログ音声出力はPCクラスで凡庸であるが、デジタル音声出力はかなりの低ジッターでハイエンド機器に組み込んでも遜色無いという評価が出ています。
デジタルなのになぜ音質の差がでるの？を説明しておくと、データは完全一致していても、その伝送タイミングがかなり重要なのです。アンプなどの受け取り側では伝送されたデータからクロックを抽出し、このタイミングを元に再生します。クロックは送信時点やケーブルの品質や光→電気変換などで微妙に揺らぎます。これがジッターで音声に変調を掛けることになってしまい、結果としてノイズとして現れ音質に影響を及ぼします。
AirMac Expressの低ジッター性能を使うと下手なCDプレーヤで再生するよりiTunesで再生したほうが良い結果が得られます。
iBook(一番上)からiTunesでAirMacExpress(左下)に音声データを送り、光出力でデジタルAVアンプ(上段)に接続しています。
CDからのリッピングは普通のAACでは粗が出てしまいますので、Apple Losslessで完全CD品質のままで取り込んでいます。
実際の再生ですが、ジッターともかくよりはCDプレーヤのメカ音がしないのが一番ありがたいです(笑)。
